Just as you would ask for directions to a shop people need to ask directions on the information super highway. A search engine spends all day looking at web sites and indexing them creating a lon list. When a person comes along and asks for "insurance for cars" the search engine consults its index and lists all of the sites that contain those words. Basically the more words on the web page that relate to your search the higher up it will appear on the list it produces for you. A small summary is attached to each listed site to help you select which one to use such as "www.acmeinsurance for classic cars" or "www.anotherinsurance for young drivers" etc etc. Why is search engine ranking important? When people look for information on the internet they use a search engine. Basically the higher up you rank in the listing is the more likely you are to get visited. Many searches produce a long list that sometime runs for hundreds of pages. People scan down the list from the top and go to the first listing that offers to gove them the answer they were looking for. Can we influence the indexing? No - it would be nice! Each search engine uses a complex formulae related to the frequency of words, where they appear on the page and even how big they are to sort out it's ranking for any search phrase or word. A filter is added to exclude anyone from putting the word "insurance" on a website a million times hoping for a number 1 position. (this is called spamming and can result in PERMENANT exclusion from a search engine or directory.) Do people use search engines? On a typical day the words "web design" were searched for 1982 times on just 1 search engine (this is not a major category!).

The trouble was that there are 1862883 sites that are competing for those keywords. So to stand a chance at getting a high search engine ranking calls for some expertise in optimizing a web page for a high listing for those keywords -or a similar set of keywords with less competition. Each day there are billions of searches performed - and some of the Internet users were looking for a business like yours. Web design. Don't ever accept a site from a web designer that has not been submitted to a search engine. Which is the best to submit to? The largest of all is Yahoo but there are thousands of search engines and search portals available. Some search engines are industry related so we would only submit to them if it was appropriate for your business. IGNORE any of the submit your site to 1000's of search engines for free adds as they infrequently work and may get you banned from the search engines, some are a ploy to get your email address and offer you a paid for service that is better! Search engines do not like these multi submission sites and take steps to stop them from making submissions such as giving a false OK message! How do we get a high ranking? With fairy magic! We have taken hundreds of hours analysing the search engines and looking at the high ranking sites and we know what must be done to obtain a high listing for each of the major search engines. Strangely enough most people skip over the number 1 listing so it's best to be near to the top.We can advise on an existing website or even re-design it for you to obtain a higher ranking. Another option is to design a stand alone site for you that is optimized for the search engines and then it will encourage visitors to go to your web site. Nothing winds up an Internet user more than a badly designed web site that takes ages to download because of some flash graphics or sound, especially if it is not essential to the site.
